A Russian military aircraft has crashed in the eastern Amur region, killing at least six crew members and leaving one person hospitalised, Russia's Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The Tu-95 bomber went down during a training flight in an uninhabited area of Amur, a region bordering China, according to the ministry. The aircraft was flying without ammunition, according to state media reports.

Russia's military said an Aerospace Forces commission had been dispatched to the crash site to establish the circumstances of the incident.

Unverified social media videos purportedly showing the crash aftermath depicted large amounts of smoke rising from the burning aircraft.

The Tupolev Tu-95 is a large, Soviet-era bomber capable of carrying, launching and delivering nuclear weapons. It was first flown in 1952 and entered service in 1956, remaining in active use by the Russian military, including in routine exercises.

This is not the first aviation accident in Russia's Far East. In July last year, an Antonov An-24 crashed in poor weather conditions while travelling to the town of Tynda, killing all 48 people on board. In August 2021, a Mil Mi-8 helicopter crashed on the Kamchatka Peninsula with 16 people on board, the majority of whom were tourists.
