Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that a man suspected of plotting an assassination attack against him and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has been detained.
The interior ministry had earlier reported that police received credible information about possible attacks targeting both officials.
Security services convened a special meeting on Sunday after the threat was identified. A spokesman said officials were treating it as "deadly serious."
The suspect, a Polish national, was arrested in the Lower Silesia region. Jacek Dobrzynski, a spokesman for the Special Services Coordinator, confirmed the arrest to local media.
"In this case we are talking about a strong likelihood that these threats could actually be carried out," Dobrzynski said.
The plot was uncovered after an email containing information about the potential attack was forwarded to police by the State Protection Service, the agency responsible for ministers' security. Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka confirmed the details.
Tusk thanked police for "swift and decisive action" in apprehending the suspect.
Tusk has served as Polish prime minister since 2023. He previously held the office from 2007 to 2014 and served as president of the European Council from 2014 to 2019.
