Musk Announces Tesla to Wind Down Cybertruck Production in Texas to Make Way for Cybercab

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the company will wind down production of its Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas, citing the need to make room for increased manufacturing of the new Cybercab robo-taxi model.

Musk made the announcement in a post on X on Friday. "Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production," he wrote.

He did not clarify whether Cybertruck manufacturing would shift to another facility. The Texas plant is the only known production site for the model.

The Cybertruck was first announced in 2019, with its angular stainless steel exterior proving immediately polarising. At an unveiling ceremony that year, Musk sought to demonstrate that its windows were shatterproof, but the demonstration backfired when metal balls cracked two of them.

The vehicle became available to consumers at the end of 2023. Musk had initially predicted sales of around 250,000 units per year. The model fell far short of that target, with approximately 38,965 units sold in 2024. That figure declined by nearly half in 2025, with 20,237 units sold.

Beyond disappointing sales, the Cybertruck has also been affected by quality problems and recalls since its launch.

The vehicle has become a symbol of opposition to Musk for some, particularly as he became increasingly involved in United States politics. He briefly led the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, a panel tasked by the administration of President Donald Trump with reducing the size of federal government agencies.

Musk most recently spent nearly half a billion dollars during the US midterm election campaign in support of Republican candidates, including more than 200 million dollars backing the failed Senate candidacy of Republican Ken Paxton in Texas.

The spending did not prevent a Democratic wave, which saw the party take commanding control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. The political shift could lead to investigations into Musk's work with the federal government.

In a reply to a user on X, Musk called the Cybertruck the "best vehicle Tesla has ever made" and described the wind-down as the "end of an era".
