Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won the Michigan Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim senator in United States history.

El-Sayed, described as a progressive favorite, secured the open Senate seat following what was reported as a bitter campaign against his Republican opponent.

Following his victory, El-Sayed delivered an impassioned speech to supporters.
