The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has reported intercepting a drone launched by Houthi forces toward Saudi Arabia's Mecca region, as hostilities between the two sides continue to escalate.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said the drone was "intercepted and destroyed" on Friday morning. He also confirmed that a cruise missile targeting western Saudi Arabia had been intercepted and destroyed by coalition air defences.

The interceptions came a day after the coalition reported destroying a ballistic missile fired toward the kingdom's eastern region on Thursday. Two additional ballistic missiles launched toward the Saudi capital, Riyadh, were also said to have been intercepted and destroyed.

A Houthi spokesperson denied that the group had targeted Mecca or its surrounding region. The spokesperson reiterated that cross-border attacks remain focused solely on Saudi energy and military infrastructure.

"Our operations target [Saudi] oil facilities and military bases, and there is no longer anyone in this world who believes these fabrications and lies propagated by the criminal Al Saud regime," the Houthi spokesman wrote.

The Saudi-led coalition has previously accused the Houthis of launching drones toward Islam's two holiest cities, Mecca and Medina. The Houthis have consistently denied such claims.

Humanitarian agencies have warned of worsening conditions for civilians as the conflict shows no sign of slowing.
