At least two people have been killed and dozens more injured after an explosion at a military barracks in Bolivia, with authorities warning the death toll could be higher.

Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano said at least 58 people were injured when "pyrotechnic material" detonated at the barracks, where an artillery regiment is stationed, at around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Friday.

The explosion occurred in Viacha, a town approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the capital La Paz.

A local health official said between 10 and 15 people were believed to have died in the blast. A separate source put the death toll at at least 10. The official death count confirmed by authorities stood at a minimum of two, with the final figure still uncertain.

Police said dozens of homes had been damaged, with windows shattered across the surrounding area. Emergency workers were searching through rubble at the scene.

A police spokesman told sources that fireworks had been stored at the barracks. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

A health official warned of a risk of further explosions and urged residents to stay at least 150 metres away from the military base.

Local authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning.
