Two people were killed when Russian drones struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
The Starokozache road crossing, located approximately 500 kilometres south of Kyiv, was shut following the overnight attack. Images from the scene show several burnt-out cars amid debris. Three others were injured in the strike, according to Odesa regional head Oleh Kiper.
A Moldovan driver was also injured, Moldova's foreign ministry confirmed.
Zelensky renewed calls for international support in the wake of the attack, saying "the aggression must be stopped here and now before it spreads any further."
In the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, a woman was killed and 14 people, including two children, were injured after a Russian drone struck a nine-storey residential building, officials said.
In Russia, four people, including a child, were killed in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk following a Ukrainian drone attack, local officials said. Governor Veniamin Kondratiev described it as a "massive overnight enemy drone attack." A further 29 people were injured, and damage was reported to residential buildings, a church and a preschool.
A separate drone strike hit an industrial facility in the Arctic city of Novy Urengoy, nearly 3,000 kilometres from Ukraine. Regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov said the attack was repelled but that falling wreckage triggered a fire. No injuries were reported there.
Russia's defence ministry said its forces had shot down 596 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Moldova has increasingly found itself caught up in the conflict. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan confirmed that 17 drones struck Moldovan territory in August alone, more than during the whole of the previous year.
"Those who ignore or downplay these threats - and refuse to name the aggressor - are denying reality," Tofan wrote on social media. "Russia started this war. Russia alone bears responsibility."
Russia and Ukraine have recently stepped up long-range strikes despite renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The strikes came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump regarding efforts to end the conflict. The Trump administration has been pressing for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, with Kyiv indicating such talks could take place this month. The Kremlin, however, said it was too early to discuss a date or venue.
The call followed talks between US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff and Putin in Moscow, after which the pair travelled to Kyiv for meetings with Zelensky.
