A localised humanitarian ceasefire in Ukraine's Kherson region was set to expire on Sunday night, as Russian strikes continued to batter energy infrastructure across the country.
The limited truce, described as the longest of the war, was due to end at 22:59 Ukrainian time (21:00 GMT) on Sunday, after Russia declined to extend it.
The ceasefire had been in place since Tuesday and was brokered with the help of US First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV. It was initially confined to the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky before being expanded to cover the wider Kherson region.
Oleshky had been cut off by the Dnipro river on one side and Russian forces on the other, with exit routes mined and exposed to drone attacks. Residents trapped in the city had been suffering severe shortages of food, water and electricity.
While the localised ceasefire held along that section of the front line, fighting continued elsewhere across Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces struck energy infrastructure in four regions overnight on Saturday into Sunday, leaving hundreds of thousands without power.
Repair crews worked throughout the day to restore connections. Most customers in the Dnipropetrovsk region had power restored by early evening, though more than 60,000 remained without electricity, according to the regional governor.
A separate overnight strike killed two people, including a 13-year-old girl, in the Vinnytsia region, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said.
Because of repeated attacks on energy infrastructure, emergency power cuts have been introduced across the country. Even in the capital Kyiv, electricity is cut off for most of the day, and water supplies are also disrupted.
Zelensky said in a social media post that the intensity of Russian strikes had been "extremely high" over the past week, adding that Russia was "trying to take maximum advantage of the shortage of ballistic missile interceptors."
He said Ukraine communicated "every day" its need for Patriot missiles — described as the only effective weapon for intercepting Russia's ballistic missiles — to the United States, Europe and other partners. He thanked countries for their support and longer-term commitments while calling for more immediate aid.
Ukraine also struck a major missile fuel production facility in Russia's Rostov region overnight, causing a fire and damaging four production facilities, Zelensky said.
