Russia launched a large-scale aerial attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight Friday to Saturday, Ukrainian and Russian authorities confirmed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia deployed 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles during the attack. He said Russia was trying to "push Kyiv … and the entire country into a blackout" and repeated his call for increased support from the United States.

Ukrainian authorities reported one person killed and at least eight wounded. An earlier report put the number of injured at five.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed strikes on the Northern Bridge and described the capital's situation as "extremely difficult" regarding power, heating and water supplies. Overnight temperatures in the city dropped to 0 degrees Celsius.

The Kyiv region's governor, Tymur Tkachenko, said energy facilities in three districts of the region had been hit.

Russia's Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted the Northern Bridge, which it claimed was being used by the Ukrainian military to transport weapons and equipment, and the Meridian Plant, which it said produces Flamingo cruise missiles.

Moscow said the strikes also damaged several energy and industrial facilities in the Kyiv region, an electricity substation in the neighboring Zhytomyr region, and a cargo vessel in the Black Sea.

The attack comes days before a fourth round of trilateral talks between Kyiv, Moscow and Washington, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. Previous rounds of US-brokered negotiations have failed to produce breakthroughs, with territorial and security questions remaining major points of contention.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump said the war could be close to being settled and described his vision of a "big, beautiful agreement" with Moscow that involves "all of Europe."

Last Friday, a six-day local ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in the southern Kherson region enabled the evacuation of approximately 800 residents. The brief truce was brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump.

Russia has stepped up airstrikes on Ukraine in recent months, targeting energy infrastructure, major cities, and bridges.
