Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, ending a three-day halt to strikes on the Ukrainian capital that had coincided with visits by US envoys to both Moscow and Kyiv.
At least two people were killed and 10 others wounded in the strikes, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He said the attacks caused damage across five city districts: Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Solomianskyi.
Ukraine's air force said it had downed 142 drones, 31 of 32 cruise missiles, and two ballistic missiles launched by Russia. It did not disclose the total number of ballistic missiles used in the attack.
Drones also struck buildings in the Boryspil and Fastiv districts on the outskirts of the capital, according to Ukraine's emergency services.
Russia's state news agency TASS confirmed that the three-day suspension ordered by President Vladimir Putin had expired on Monday evening local time.
Ukraine criticised Russia for launching the attacks so soon after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had visited both capitals.
"The moment the US president's peace envoys left, [President Vladimir] Putin launched another massive, horrific attack against Kyiv," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on social media. "His ballistic missiles speak louder than his words on diplomacy."
Witkoff and Kushner held talks with officials in Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend. Their meeting in Moscow on Saturday lasted more than three hours. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described it as "highly useful."
After talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Witkoff said: "We've had a very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we are very encouraged, and we look forward to continuing this as long as it takes."
He also raised the prospect of reviving three-way negotiations to end the war.
A White House official told sources that the next steps regarding the conflict would be announced in the coming weeks.
Russia and Ukraine had pledged to halt strikes on each other's capitals for three days while Washington dispatched the envoys. Fighting continued elsewhere during that period.
Following the attacks on Kyiv, Russian regional Governor Roman Busargin said a Ukrainian drone strike hit civilian infrastructure in Saratov, nearly 1,000 kilometres from Moscow, injuring several people.
At least one person was killed in a separate Ukrainian attack on the Russian town of Starodub in the Bryansk border region, according to the area's acting governor, Yegor Kovalchuk.
At least two people were killed and one person was wounded in a Ukrainian attack on the Crimean Peninsula, according to Moscow-appointed regional Governor Sergei Aksyonov.
Two additional deaths were reported in Ukrainian drone attacks, one in Russia's Kursk region and another in the Bryansk region, according to local officials. The reports could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate comment from Ukraine.
