Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 El Clasico victory over LaLiga leaders Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday, cutting the gap between the two sides to three points.

Mbappe opened the scoring before half-time, then struck late to seal the win and inflict Barcelona's first domestic defeat of the season. Raphinha had briefly levelled for the hosts.

Real Madrid remain third in the table, behind Atletico Madrid and Hansi Flick's Barcelona, who had won their first nine league games before a difficult week.

The Catalans suffered a second consecutive defeat following their Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Barcelona had won six of the seven previous Clasicos since Flick's arrival, but were surprisingly subdued against Jose Mourinho's side.

"In general, we didn't have a great game. In the first half, we weren't ourselves; there were a lot of things we could have done better," Barcelona midfielder Pedri said after the match.

"We wanted to win the Clasico in front of our fans, but the season is very long… a league is not won here."

Real Madrid, without suspended winger Vinicius Junior, recorded their fifth straight win across all competitions. The result continues a promising run under Mourinho, who was brought back to the club after two trophyless seasons in an effort to halt Barcelona's dominance.

The opening period was cagey, with few clear chances. Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi twice reacted well to shut down Mbappe, while Real Madrid's Marc Cucurella repeatedly grabbed at 19-year-old winger Lamine Yamal.

Anthony Gordon, making his first Clasico appearance since joining Barcelona from Newcastle, back-heeled the ball to Raphinha, who fired narrowly wide.

Barcelona were dealt an early setback when young defender Xavi Espart was forced off injured before the half-hour mark, replaced by Alejandro Balde.

Andriy Lunin, starting in goal for Madrid after Thibaut Courtois withdrew from the squad with flu, made a save at his near post from Gordon before the visitors took the lead.

Mbappe scored his 10th league goal of the season in fortunate circumstances. Barcelona's Gerard Martin cleared a cross directly at the Frenchman, who deflected it into the net.

Barcelona responded and created a clear chance to equalise, but Yamal miscued in front of goal, firing wide when well placed to level. Yan Diomande then came close to doubling Madrid's lead before half-time, drilling into the side netting.

Raphinha pulled Barcelona level just after the hour mark. Pedri fed the Brazilian — LaLiga's top scorer with 13 goals — who fired through Jude Bellingham's legs, leaving Lunin unable to keep the shot out.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper then produced a superb save to deny Martin from a corner as Barcelona pushed forward. Yamal bent an effort wide with Lunin at full stretch, and substitute Frenkie de Jong had a shot desperately blocked by Dean Huijsen.

There was a late sting in the tail for the hosts. Substitute Gabriel Jesus lost possession and Madrid broke quickly. Eduardo Camavinga beat Cubarsi and cut the ball back for Mbappe, who tucked home his second into an empty net after goalkeeper Joan Garcia was drawn out of position.
