The Prince of Wales will attend the funeral of King Harald V of Norway in Oslo, Buckingham Palace has announced. Prince William will represent his father, King Charles, at the service.

Princess Anne will also attend, in a personal capacity, as godmother to Norway's new monarch, King Haakon VIII.

King Harald V died on 28 August at the age of 89, after 35 years on the Norwegian throne. He has been widely described as a popular and modernising figure, hailed by many as an inclusive "people's king."

King Charles paid tribute to his "dear cousin" and "much-loved kinsman and friend" following the announcement of Harald's death. In a message of condolence, Charles praised Harald's "unwavering dedication" and said his "kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades."

The late Queen Elizabeth II and King Harald were second cousins, sharing the same great-grandparents, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Prince William's attendance follows the established convention that the sovereign does not attend the funerals of other heads of state. In April last year, William represented his father at the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican.

The funeral will take place on 9 September at Oslo Cathedral, with a procession preceding the service. It will be followed by a private burial at Norway's royal mausoleum in the Akershus Fortress.

Mourners will include Harald's widow, Queen Sonja, now the queen mother, King Haakon VIII, other members of the Norwegian royal family, and European royals.

Thousands have already queued to pay their respects to the late king during his lying in state at the chapel of the Royal Palace in Oslo. Large crowds are expected for the funeral procession and service.

William and the Princess of Wales carried out an official tour to Norway in 2018, dining with King Harald and Queen Sonja at the Royal Palace. On that occasion, Harald described the couple as "family."
